News Reports About The Separation

September 4, 2001

There are many, many articles in newspapers and on news sites today. Several of them simply carried the Reuters and AP reports, so I have not posted every item I have found.

Entertainment Tonight and Access Hollywood reported on the separation this evening. A clip was shown of Kate speaking to reporters today (see above pics). You can see the same footage by following the link above ('watch on Real Player'). I must comment that watching the images on television was very moving emotionally, as Kate struggled for composure.

Reuters has filed an updated report this evening and picked up on the comments made today by Jim’s grandfather:

"Winslet’s Success Blamed For Marriage Split"

LONDON (Reuters) - "Titanic" star Kate Winslet's marriage to film director Jim Threapleton hit the rocks because of their diverging careers, Threapleton's grandfather told a British tabloid on Wednesday.

Norman Threapleton told the Mirror that Winslet's huge success had placed enormous pressure on the young couple, who announced on Monday they were separating after less than three years of marriage. "She's a star while Jim is trying to make his way in his own field. Jim is a bit of a quiet type and I don't know whether all this theatrical and film life has gone down well with him. It's not really his thing," Threapleton told the Mirror. "He wants to be recognized in his own right -- write his scripts and get away from things -- and not just be Kate's husband," he said.

Winslet, red-eyed and without her wedding ring, spoke publicly about the breakup for the first time on Tuesday when she appeared outside a family home to make a statement to waiting media. "Jim and I have great respect for each other. There's no malice. It's extremely sad but we're all fine," she said. She added that the couple's 11-month-old daughter, Mia, "remains the happy child she always has been."

Monday's announcement came as a shock to many who perceived Winslet's marriage as the picture of domestic bliss. But friends and neighbors of the couple have spoken of weeks of arguments and tearful rows. "Kate believes their relationship has suffered a seismic fault. There's a lot of hurt there," the Mirror quoted one unnamed friend as saying.

Winslet, 25, was catapulted to international stardom by her role as Rose in "Titanic," one of the most successful movies ever. But she largely turned her back on the trappings of Hollywood to appear in a clutch of smaller films and lead a relatively ordinary life in rural England.

The twice Oscar-nominated actress met Threapleton, 26, on the set of "Hideous Kinky" in 1997. They were engaged within months and married in a low-key ceremony the following year.

Winslet often spoke of her determination to put her domestic happiness ahead of her career. Last year the couple bought an 800,000 pound ($1.17 million) rural home in southern England in which to raise their daughter.

The actress will next be seen in the World War Two spy thriller "Enigma."

Femail has an article that includes interesting comments by Jim’s grandfather and a neighbor:

"Kate: Where did it go wrong?"
Titanic star Kate Winslet and husband Jim Threapleton - thought to have one of the most loving marriages in showbiz - are to split.

The 25-year-old actress, who was tearful and fighting to keep a check on her emotions, spoke of the shock decision today saying: "This is an absolutely amicable separation and it is a mutual decision between both of us. Jim and I have great respect for each other. There is no malice at all. It is extremely sad but we are all fine."

Miss Winslet, who will be 26 next month, emerged from the north London flat where she is staying this morning to talk to journalists. She was wearing a green tee-shirt, blue denim jacket, black trousers and flip-flops, but there was no ring on her wedding finger.

The couple, who have an 11-month baby daughter Mia, remained in touch, she said. They married in November 1998. The actress told reporters: "Jim and I are both communicating constantly. Mia remains the happy child that she always has been." Then she added: "That is all and I would be grateful now if you would respect our privacy." The actress, who was wearing barely any make-up, then disappeared back inside the flat where she is staying with Mia.

There was no sign of 26-year-old Mr Threapleton, who met the Oscar-nominated star on the set of her film Hideous Kinky on which he was an assistant director.

Threapleton's grandfather, Norman Threapleton, said the couple may have split because Jim was unhappy living in Kate's shadow. "Kate made all the running really, she was the one who said she fell head over heels and he made her laugh, and that amused us a little bit because he's a bit serious minded is James," Mr Threapleton told Channel 5 News. "He's not shy exactly but he just keeps in the background and I think that might have had some effect on him in the months since the wedding. He wants to be recognised eventually in his own right and not to be just Kate's husband."

Neighbours said Miss Winslet had been staying for some time in the flat in Islington where she used to live. The actress is believed to have left the couple's riverside home in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, several weeks ago. It is believed that the split came after weeks of arguments between the couple.

Miss Winslet's spokesman Robert Garlock said: "No other parties are involved in this amicable and respectful separation. Their daughter Mia will remain first priority for both of them."

Musician David Hancock, 31, who lives in the flat below hers said he had heard a couple arguing there last night and earlier this morning but could not say who it was.

Last night's announcement shocked the showbusiness world, which widely regarded Winslet's marriage as happy and stable. In a recent interview conducted before the marriage hit the rocks, Winslet said: "Before I met Jim I was very much, you know, 'I don't believe in marriage', but now we just want to be with each other. We're totally equal in our relationship, but in certain situations when we go out he wears the trousers," she added.

They married in November 1998 in a deliberately down-to-earth ceremony at the Winslet family's local church, All Saints, in Reading, Berks. The reception at a pub featured bangers and mash for the guests, who included actress Emma Thompson.

Winslet, who won plaudits for losing so much weight after the birth of her daughter, is due to meet the Prince of Wales later this month at the premiere of her new wartime film Enigma, produced by Rolling Stone Mick Jagger.

Miss Winslet later left her north London flat carrying baby Mia in her arms. She put her 11-month-old daughter into the baby seat of a blue 4x4 vehicle parked outside the terraced house. A security guard accompanied her, carrying a pram while her assistant and another woman helped her through a crowd of waiting media.

Miss Winslet then climbed into the back seat of the vehicle and kissed her baby on the head as she was driven away. The child, wearing blue trousers, a white top and blue socks looked contented as she chewed on a biscuit.

After she left a neighbour emerged from her house and said she had known the actress for around five years. Martha Brown, 60, who lives two doors away from Miss Winslet's flat, said she thought the star was "just an ordinary girl". She said: "She is just an ordinary girl to me. I think she really loves him. It is a temporary bust-up between a married couple. They will get back together." Ms Brown said she had not heard any arguments from the pair, who she believed moved back to the flat in north London together six weeks ago after their home in Surrey was flooded.

Femail also has an article that speculates (sigh) on the reasons for the break-up:

"Why did it go wrong for Kate?"

The announcement that actress Kate Winslet and her husband Jim Threapleton are to split has shocked the showbiz world. The couple were thought to have one of the most rock-steady celebrity marriages.

Here, Zelda West-Meads, femail.co.uk's renowned relationship counsellor, explains the stresses and strains which may have caused their three-year marriage to fall apart.

Zelda says:

Two things cause huge conflict in marriage: a partner's career taking off, especially if it's at the expense of the other. And the birth of the first baby.

Men find it extremely difficult to witness their partner's success, especially if their own career is floundering.

The birth of a greatly loved baby can cause havoc in relationships. So many marriages go wrong after the birth. It is the most likely time for a marriage to fall apart with 70 per cent of new parents in one study reporting a drop in marital happiness.

Kate Winslet and Jim Threapleton have been hit by both of these major problems at once. In the first few months after the birth the mother is so exhausted and overstretched by all the new demands on her that there is little time for the relationship. Sex is often the last thing on her mind.

It's not easy for the man to adjust to this sudden change and Jim Threapleton probably feels he is at the bottom of her list of priorities. He could also feel jealous and insecure seeing her surrounded by successful men.

Kate could experience this as feeling he just does not understand her, seeing it as his resentment of her success. So each is angry and resentful of the other.

As there is a child and as long as there really is no one else involved it would be worth them considering marriage counselling.

Learning to understand how the other feels could make a difference. Jim perhaps would need to concentrate on his career more, which has been put on hold to look after the baby.

Equally, Kate might have to accept that she takes on less work if she wants one of them to be around for Mia. But they both have to be prepared to work at this.

More analysis from Femail - this time astrological:

"The Moon and Kate's Marriage," By Lori Reid, femail.co.uk moon signs expert

While everyone knows their Sun sign, very few of us are aware of our moon sign. And yet it is the moon that is linked to our emotions and that has a subtle but potent influence on our feelings. Understanding your moon sign gives you a direct insight into the fundamental inner you. It reveals your moods and reactions, your needs and desires, how you interact with others and what you expect out of a relationship.

On the day Kate Winslet was born - October 5, 1975 - the moon was in Libra, a gentle sign, full of poise and charm. For people who are born with this moon sign, beauty and harmony are quintessentially important to them in life. They are lovely, easy-going, idealistic souls and never happier than when they are in love.

In fact, it's sometimes said that, rather than being in love with another person, they're in love with love itself. These people are made for marriage and a happy relationship is fundamental to their well being.

But Moon in Libra folk are not emotionally tough and they find it hard to take the rough with the smooth. They cannot abide conflict in any form and the merest hint of an argument will make them feel ill. Given that gentle Kate not only has the moon in this sign but the sun, too, since she was born in October, this will be doubly ingrained in her nature.

She was married on November 22, 1998, when the Moon was in the sign of Capricorn which normally gives a union a foundation of cast-iron. But this is a mega-ambitious sign and it will make both parties strive to achieve status and position in life. As long as both feel fulfilled, climbing and making a success of their lives, all will be well.

When their daughter Mia was born on October 16, 2000, the idea was that Kate and Jim Threapleton would take it in turns to look after their baby, and each presumably would have a chance to work on their own careers in parallel. Unfortunately, Kate's successes it would appear have been at the cost of Jim's career progress, an expense that a Capricorn marriage moon finds difficult to afford.

Without a doubt, this would have led to frustration and tension within the marriage which is precisely the state of affairs that Kate's tender emotions cannot take. As a double Libra with both sun and moon in this sign, Kate Winslet is indecisive so it's probably taken some months for her to come to this sad conclusion about her marriage. That she intends the separation to be both amicable and respectful is typical both of her personal Libran Moon (amicable) and her marriage Capricorn moon (respectful).

Interestingly, little Mia was born with the moon in Aries and so is much more emotionally robust. No doubt as she grows, Kate will marvel her little girl's many strengths which are so directly opposite to her own.

Bravo to Ewan McGregor for his comments last night at the Moulin Rouge premiere! From Empire Online:

"Kate Winslet To Divorce"

In a move that took most of the industry by total surprise, one of the seemingly happiest marriages in showbusiness is on the rocks. An announcement by Kate Winslet’s agent late yesterday evening revealed that Winslet and her director husband Jim Threapleton had split up. The couple have been married just three years and have an 11-month old daughter.

‘No other parties are involved in this amicable and respectful separation,’ was agent Robert Garlock’s comment on the breakup. ‘Their daughter Mia will remain first priority for both of them.’

At last night’s Moulin Rouge premiere, the media had already begun speculation on what had forced the couple – who met whilst filming Hideous Kinky – to part. However Ewan McGregor wasn’t going to give the press corps the satisfaction of an answer. Asked by one reporter (not Empire Online, we hasten to add), about the impending divorce, Ewan’s heated response was; ‘I’m not talking about this, I think it’s disgusting you’re asking people about this and I think you should fucking leave people alone.’

‘I think it’s sad,’ said Brenda Blethyn – who was less backward about coming forward. ‘It’s hard leading your life under such intense speculation.’

Thanks to my friend Josie for sharing this article from The Daily Mail. Kate has supposedly told friends she doesn’t expect a reconciliation:

"My Marriage is Over, Says Kate Winslet," By Alison Boshoff

Transcribed by Josie

Kate Winslet has separated from her husband Jim Threapleton after less than three years of marriage. The actress, whose daughter Mia is 11 months old, was said last night to be 'absolutely devastated' by the break up. The couple, who married in a simple ceremony in November 1998, were thought to have one of the happiest relationships in showbusiness.

Miss Winslet, 25, has often enthused about their blissful life together. This summer she told an interviewer: "We're very lucky," adding that the birth of their daughter Mia had only strengthened the relationship.

The marriage ended with a bleak statement from Miss Winslet's spokesman Robert Garlock. He said: "Kate Winslet and Jim Threapleton announced today that they have decided to separate. No other parties are involved in this amicable and respectful separation. Their daughter Mia will remain first priority for both of them."

Miss Winslet's friends said the relationship had collapsed under the pressure of her continuing success. Threapleton, 26, an assistant director, has been unable to keep up with his wife's burgeoning career.

She was nominated for Oscars for her roles in Titanic and Sense and Sensibility and has several high profile projects on the go.
Her husband, however, is said to have been frustrated and out of work for much of the marriage. This was partly because he agreed to stay home to look after little Mia when Miss Winslet was working. The idea initially had been to take it in turns. But she found herself besieged by offers of work while he did not.

The split is understood to have happened in the past few weeks, with both moving out of the imposing home they shared beside the Thames. It is now on the market.

Miss Winslet, who is living with her daughter in her old bachelor girl pad in North London, has told friends she is convinced the relationship is over for good. She told them she does not expect a reconciliation, even though it is desperately sad to be breaking up before their baby's first birthday. She was hoping to keep the separation quiet so it did now overshadow the royal gala premiere of her film Enigma later this month. She recently attended the Edinburgh premiere of the film alone.

One friend of the couple said: "I think most people were just completely astonished when Kate told them that it was all over between her and Jim. We thought they were made for each other and they always seemed so happy. They seemed like two sides of the same coin. Kate is absolutely devastated and we are all so sorry this has happened. But she says it's definitely over and she knows her own mind and knows what she wants to do. She has said that she is getting a divorce from Jim and that the marriage has collapsed."

Threapleton said last night: "I'm sorry but I really can't talk to you at the moment, I'm going into a meeting." Miss Winslet's sister Anna, who is with her in North London, said: "I can't say anything about this."

The couple married within a year of meeting on the set of the film Hideous Kinky in Morocco. Miss Winslet insisted she knew Threapleton was 'the one' the instant she laid eyes on "this glorious looking boy with blue eyes".

Their happiness appeared to be complete when baby Mia was born last October. "She's gorgeous," Miss Winslet said at the time. "Before it was just Jim and me and now it's Jim, me and Mia and it feels the most natural thing in the world - the perfect family." In this month's edition of the glossy magazine InStyle she again spoke of her love for her husband, the son of an RAF group captain. She told how they recently escaped for a romantic night together for the first time since Mia was born.

Motherhood, she said, had "highs and lows, and at times it's tough". She also told the magazine she had lost four stone to get back to below her pre-pregnancy weight and appeared to be glowing with happiness following a family holiday in Tuscany.

Miss Winslet made her film debut at 17 in the acclaimed Heavenly Creatures, going on to international stardom in Sense and Sensibility and Titanic.

After completing Enigma, the story of the Bletchley Park codebreakers, she stars in an adaption of the French classic Thèrése Raquin. [Wasn't it the Magician's Wife she was working on?- Josie] She spent the summer playing the young Iris Murdoch in a movie about the writer's life.

From Page Six of the New York Post:

"Winslet and Hubby to Star in Divorce Court," By Bill Hoffman

The brief marriage of sexy "Titanic" star has hit an iceberg and sunk. The actress revealed yesterday she’s separating from her film-director hubby, Jim Threapleton. The surprise split comes less than a year after the birth of their daughter, Mia, and not even three years after they tied the knot.

Winslet spokesman Robert Garlock called the bust-up an "amicable and respectful separation" and insisted neither Kate nor Jim had cheated on the other. But Sky News reported that the couple had been seen bickering for several weeks.

A Hollywood source told The Post that many of Kate’s friends believe she and Jim married too young. Kate had just turned 23 when the pair walked down the aisle, and Threapleton was only a year older. "They are both wonderful people and good parents, but perhaps they should have waited a bit," the source said.

The couple met on the set of Kate’s flick "Hideous Kinky." Winslet once gushed that Threapleton was her perfect match. "When you know, you know - that’s what I have been told all my life. And now I know. I knew instantly," she said.

But Winslet - who has shed 50 pounds over the last 10 months - hinted at trouble in this month’s Style magazine, admitting that while having a baby had "strengthened the relationship," there were "highs and lows, and at times, it’s tough."

Winslet’s love life has seen tragedy before. In 1997, her then-boyfriend, Stephen Tredre, died of cancer.

From Eonline:

"Winslet's Sinking Marriage," By Josh Grossberg
It looks like Kate Winslet's seemingly unsinkable marriage has just hit an iceberg. The Titanic star, who once put family ahead of her career, has announced she's parting ways with film director husband, Jim Threapleton, after three years of marriage and one heavenly creature -- baby Mia, who was born just late last year.

According to Winslet's reps, the split was on good terms. "No other parties are involved in this amicable and respectful separation," reads a statement from Winslet rep Robert Garlock. "Their daughter Mia will remain the first priority for both of them."

Her turn as Rose in Titanic opposite Leonardo DiCaprio made her an international star and romantic icon for teen girls worldwide, but things weren't always so rosy on the homefront for the 25-year-old British actress. "Having a baby has strengthened the relationship, although there are highs and lows and at times it's tough. I know we're very lucky," Winslet tells InStyle in an interview for its September issue.

Winslet met Threapleton, a 27-year-old assistant director, on the set of the movie in 1997. The couple a year later in November 1998 in a quiet ceremony in her family's local church in her hometown of Reading in southern England.

Winslet, by then one of the most coveted actresses in Hollywood, decided to take time off to have Mia and spend more time with her new family. After the birth of their daughter, Winslet and Threapleton purchased a $1.17 million riverside mansion in Britain.

The actress has recently resumed a busy schedule. She most recently starred opposite in last year's and next hits the big screen later this year in director Michael Apted's World War II spy thriller Enigma.

From Mr. Showbiz:

"Winslet Separates From Husband"
Sexy British actress Kate Winslet created an enduring cinematic image of storybook love when she promised to "never let go" of her passion for co-star Leonardo DiCaprio at the end of Titanic.

But Winslet's real-life marriage, to British director Jim Threapleton, appears to be going down with all hands. After just three years of marriage, Winslet and Threapleton have agreed to an "amicable and respectful" separation, according to a statement released Monday by Winslet rep Robert Garlock.

Garlock also said that the pair's 11-month-old daughter, Mia, will be a "first priority" for both of them. His statement did not address the $1.17 million riverside estate in the south of England that Winslet and Threapleton moved into in August 2000.

The two became engaged shortly after meeting on the set of Winslet's Hideous Kinky in 1997 - Threapleton was an assistant director on that project - and were married in a low-key ceremony at a church in Reading, England, in November 1998. Winslet, who'll be 26 next month, was just 23 at the time.

Their marriage appeared to be a happy one, though British media outlets report that the young spouses had argued frequently in recent weeks.

Titanic brought Winslet international stardom in 1997 after she'd gained critical acclaim with a starring role in Peter Jackson's Heavenly Creatures (1994) and well-reviewed supporting turns in Ang Lee's Sense and Sensibility (1995) and Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet (1996). She'll next be seen in the World War II drama Enigma.

From the Reading Evening Post:

"Shock at Winslet Marriage Break-up"
Titanic star Kate Winslet and her film director husband Jim Threapleton are to separate after just under three years of marriage.
The shock split comes only weeks after Reading-born Kate, 25, and film director Jim, 27, were seen laughing and joking with 11-month-old-daughter Mia and a dozen family members at the town’s Womad festival.
The couple married at All Saints Church in Downshire Square, west Reading in November 1998. A reception for 200, featuring bangers and mash for the guests, was held at the Crooked Billet in Stoke Row, near Henley-on-Thames.
Paul Clerehugh, who owns the pub and saw the couple weeks before the break-up, said he was amazed by the news. He said: "I am totally surprised as the couple frequently come here, just the two of them and also with their family, and they always look very happy. They were a down-to-earth couple and I am shocked."
Evening Post reporter Matt Blackman saw the couple at Womad, where they were watching Kate’s father Roger singing in his band Bidgie Reef and the Gas. He said: "They seemed so happy when I saw them. They were laughing together and Kate was dancing on haybales having a fantastic time. She had Mia on her shoulders and looked as if she didn’t have a care in the world."
Despite appearances, the split is said to follow weeks of arguments and was confirmed by Kate’s spokesman Robert Garlock yesterday. He said: "Kate Winslet and Jim Threapleton announced that they have decided to separate. No other parties are involved in this amicable and respectful separation. Their daughter Mia will remain first priority for both of them." The spokesman refused to reveal the reasons for the split.
Kate is staying at her former flat in Islington, north London, with her daughter and her sister Anna. Neighbour Martin Louis, a 48-year-old barrister, said: "She is staying here. I see her almost every day. I think she has been here for about six weeks."

Another man living in the flat below Kate’s said he had heard a couple arguing there last night and earlier this morning but could not say who it was. Musician David Hancock, 31, added he had seen the actress several times over the past couple of weeks. "I saw her yesterday. She looked like someone who had just got out of bed. She wasn’t wearing any make-up."
Their daughter was born in October last year and last month Kate showed off a new slimline shape after shedding four stone. She recently told Sept-ember’s edition of In Style magazine that her career came second to home life. "An actor’s happiness has to come from something other than work," she said. "I know we’re very lucky."
There was no sign of either Kate or her husband at the couple’s luxury riverside home in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey. The Reverend Henry Everett, who married the couple, declined to comment on the news.

From ICBerkshire:

"Kate Winslet Separates From Husband"

Kate Winslet's separation from her husband Jim Threapleton has been amicable, according to a statement from the couple. No reason for the couple's split has been given and a spokesman said the split had been amicable and respectful.

The 25-year-old actress met Threapleton on the set of "Hideous Kinky." She once remarked that she "fell in love at first sight" with the third assistant director of the film, whom she described as a "glorious-looking boy".

Winslet's spokesman, Robert Garlock, said: "No other parties are involved in this amicable and respectful separation. Their daughter Mia will remain first priority for both of them."

The pair married on November 22, 1998. Their daughter, Mia, was born in October last year.

Winslet said in the September edition of In Style magazine that having a baby had "strengthened the relationship, although there are highs and lows and at times it's tough".

Winslet is due to appear Enigma, the first film from Mick Jagger's production company Jagged Films. She plays heroine Hester Wallace in a tale of romantic intrigue among British code-breakers trying to unravel German U-boat ciphers during World War II. The movie, which also stars Dougray Scott, Jeremy Northam and Saffron Burrows, debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in January.

From the Edinburgh Evening News:

"Winslet tells of break-up sadness," By Diane King
Titanic star Kate Winslet today spoke of her sadness at the break-up of her marriage. The actress, who announced her separation from her film director husband Jim Threapleton yesterday, told reporters today: "This is an absolutely amicable separation and it is a mutual decision between both of us. Jim and I have great respect for each other. There is no malice at all. It is extremely sad but we are all fine."
Miss Winslet, who will be 26 next month, this morning emerged from the north London flat where she is now staying this morning to talk to journalists. She was wearing a green tee-shirt, blue denim jacket, black trousers and flip-flops, but there was no ring on her wedding finger.
The couple, who have an 11-month baby daughter Mia, remain in touch, she said.
Miss Winslet, who was not wearing her wedding ring, later left the north London flat carrying the couple’s baby Mia in her arms. She put her 11-month-old daughter into the baby seat of a blue 4x4 vehicle parked outside the terraced house. A security guard accompanied her, carrying a pram, while her assistant and another woman helped her through a crowd of waiting media.
Miss Winslet then climbed into the back seat of the vehicle and kissed her baby on the head as she was driven away. The child, wearing blue trousers, a white top and blue socks looked contented as she chewed on a biscuit. The group did not say where the actress was going.

There was no sign of 26-year-old Mr Threapleton, who met the Oscar-nominated star on a film the set of her film Hideous Kinky on which he was an assistant director. The couple married in November 1998.
A next-door neighbour, her young daughter and an employee of the actress were also inside the flat. Neighbours said Miss Winslet had been staying for some time in the flat in Islington where she used to live. The actress is believed to have left the couple’s riverside home in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, several weeks ago.
A statement from the star’s spokesman Robert Garlock last night confirmed that Miss Winslet and Mr Threapleton, 26, were separating after a three-year marriage. It is believed that the split came after weeks of arguments between the couple. Mr Garlock said: "No other parties are involved in this amicable and respectful separation. Their daughter Mia will remain first priority for both of them."
Neighbours in the quiet street where she used to live with her sister Anna said today that the actress had moved in around six weeks ago and had been seen coming and going on a number of occasions. Neighbour Martin Louis, a 48-year-old barrister who lives nearby, said: "She is staying here. I see her almost every day. I think she has been here for about six weeks." Another man living in the flat below Miss Winslet’s said he had heard a couple arguing there last night and earlier this morning but could not say who it was. Musician David Hancock, 31, added he had seen the actress several times over the past couple of weeks. "I saw her yesterday. She looked like someone who had just got out of bed. She wasn’t wearing any make-up," he said.
Last night’s announcement shocked the showbusiness world, which widely regarded Winslet’s marriage as happy and stable. Winslet admitted it was "love at first sight", and has spoken at length about how meeting Threapleton, a third assistant director from Yorkshire, helped ease the pain after the death of her former boyfriend and EastEnders scriptwriter Stephen Tedre only months earlier.
The Titanic actress’s wedding reception at a pub featured bangers and mash for the guests, who included actress Emma Thompson, and the couple turned down lucrative magazine deals to cover it.
She often spoke of their wedded bliss and how the birth of their daughter Mia last year had made them stronger than ever. In a recent interview conducted before the marriage hit the rocks, Winslet said: "Before I met Jim I was very much, you know, ‘I don’t believe in marriage’, but now we just want to be with each other. We’re totally equal in our relationship, but in certain situations when we go out he wears the trousers," she added.
They married in November 1998 in a deliberately down-to-earth ceremony at the Winslet family’s local church, All Saints, in Reading, Berks. The reception at a pub featured bangers and mash for the guests, who included actress Emma Thompson.
Winslet, who won plaudits for losing so much weight after the birth of her daughter, is due to meet the Prince of Wales later this month at the premiere of her new wartime film Enigma, which was produced by Rolling Stone Mick Jagger.

From CNN:

"Love on the Rocks for Winslet"

LONDON, England -- British actress Kate Winslet has split from her film director husband Jim Threapleton after less than three years of marriage. "This is an absolutely amicable separation and it is a mutual decision between both of us," Winslet told the Press Association. "Jim and I have great respect for each other," she added. "There is no malice at all. It is extremely sad but we are all fine."

The announcement has rocked the show business world, where Winslet's marriage to Threapleton was regarded as the picture of domestic happiness. But in an interview in the September issue of "InStyle" magazine, Winslet hinted that all was not well in her personal life. "Having a baby has strengthened the relationship, although there are highs and lows and at times it's tough. I know we're very lucky," she said.

Shortly after the split was announced, the actress told reporters that the couple's 11-month old daughter Mia remained the priority for both of them. "Jim and I are both communicating constantly. Mia remains the happy child that she has always been," she said, asking reporters to "respect our privacy."

'Love at first sight' -- Winslet was catapulted to international stardom by her role as Rose in "Titanic," one of the most successful movies ever made. Since then she has largely turned her back on Hollywood blockbusters to appear in a clutch of smaller films.

It was on the set of "Hideous Kinky" that the Winslet met assistant director Threapleton in 1997. They were engaged within months. The actress spoke of her "love at first sight" for a "glorious-looking boy" when she first laid eyes on Threapleton.

The couple married in a low-key ceremony in Winslet's local church in Reading, southern England, in 1998, shunning lucrative offers from magazines for the rights to their wedding pictures.

Winslet often spoke of her determination to put her domestic happiness ahead of her career. Last year the couple bought a $1.17 million rural home in southern England in which to raise their baby daughter, born in October 2000.

The curvaceous actress was frequently praised for her outspoken comments on dieting. She hit the headlines last month after revealing she had shed four stone (25 kg) after a consultation with a "facial analyst" who examined her face for signs of nutritional deficiency.

Winslet will next be seen in the World War II spy thriller "Enigma."

From the UK Guardian:

"After Three Years, Marriage of Titanic Star Winslet Hits Iceberg," By Rebecca Allison
As far as showbusiness weddings go, the marriage of Kate Winslet and her husband, Jim Threapleton, appeared to be one of the most stable celebrity unions. But last night Winslet's publicist, Robert Garlock, announced their decision to separate, saying that no other parties were involved in what was an "amicable and respectful separation."

Despite the difference in their celebrity status, the couple appeared to have had one of the most stable relationships in showbusiness. They have a daughter, Mia, aged 11 months; and the actress, who starred in the film Titanic, never seemed to tire of describing their wedded bliss.

She had fallen "in love at first sight" with a "glorious looking boy" - Threapleton, an assistant director from Yorkshire - on the set of the film Hideous Kinky, shot in Morocco in 1998. Meeting him had helped ease the pain of the death from cancer in December 1997 of her former boyfriend, the EastEnders scriptwriter Stephen Tedre.

Winslet and Threapleton married in November 1998 in a down-to-earth ceremony at her family's local church, All Saints, in Reading, Berkshire. Shortly after she said in an interview with the Guardian: "I don't want to start talking about it, but believe me, before I met Jim I was very much, 'Oh I don't believe in marriage'... but we don't want to be without each other. Ever."

Winslet recently said the baby had strengthened their relationship but she admitted they had difficulties. "There are highs and lows and at times it's tough," she said.

She is due to appear in Enigma, playing Hester Wallace in a tale of romantic intrigue among British code breakers during the Second World War.

Ananova filed these reports:

Kate Winslet has spoken of her sadness at the break-up of her marriage.
The Titanic star announced her separation from her film director husband Jim Threapleton last night.
She told reporters today it is an absolutely amicable separation and a mutual decision. "Jim and I have great respect for each other. There is no malice at all. It is extremely sad but we are all fine," she said.
The actress, who will be 26 next month, emerged from the north London flat where she is staying to talk to journalists. She was wearing a green T-shirt, blue denim jacket, black trousers and flip-flops, but there was no ring on her wedding finger.
The couple, who have an 11-month daughter Mia, remained in touch, she said. They married in November 1998.
Kate told reporters: "Jim and I are both communicating constantly. Mia remains the happy child that she always has been. That is all and I would be grateful now if you would respect our privacy."
The actress, who was wearing barely any make-up, then disappeared back inside the flat where she is staying with Mia. A security guard arrived at the house around half-an-hour earlier and said Miss Winslet would be leaving at some point today.
There was no sign of 26-year-old Threapleton, who met the Oscar-nominated star on the set of her film Hideous Kinky on which he was an assistant director.
A next-door neighbour, her young daughter and an employee of the actress were also inside the flat.

The Titanic star is believed to have left the couple's riverside home in Surrey several weeks ago, moving into her former flat in Islington, north London, with their daughter Mia.

From Sky News:

"Kate’s Split: It’s Sad But I’m Fine"

A subdued and red-eyed Kate Winslet has spoken of her sadness at the break-up of her marriage to director Jim Threapleton. The actress was not wearing her wedding ring when she emerged from the London flat where she has been staying with her baby daughter for several weeks. "This is an absolutely amicable separation and it is a mutual decision between both of us", she said of the end of her three-year marriage.

‘No Malice’ -- "Jim and I have great respect for each other. There is no malice at all. It is extremely sad but we are all fine."

Kate, 26 next month, has moved back into her bachelor pad in Islington with baby Mia, who is less than a year old. Her sister is also staying with her. She said she and Jim, 27, were "communicating constantly", adding: "Mia remains the happy child that she has always been." She asked the media to respect the family's privacy before going back into her flat.

Later, Kate left the flat with Mia, climbing into the back seat of a 4x4 car with her and kissing her on the head as they drove through a crowd of paparazzi.

From People News:

"Winslet Speaks About Split"
'It is extremely sad but we are all fine'
Kate Winslet has spoken about her split from husband Jim Threapleton for the first time. She told reporters that the separation was both amicable and mutual. Speaking outside the Islington flat where she has been staying with her 11-month-old daughter, Mia, she said: 'Jim and I have great respect for each other. There is no malice at all. It is extremely sad, but we are all fine. Jim and I are both communicating constantly. Mia remains the happy child that she always has been. That is all and I would be grateful now if you would respect our privacy.' Winslet is thought to have left the Surrey home she shared with Threapleton six weeks ago. Her spokesman said no third party was involved in the ending of the three-year marriage. 'They seemed like two sides of the same coin,' said a friend, 'but she says it's definitely over and she knows her own mind. She has said that she's getting a divorce from Jim and that the marriage has collapsed.'

From BBC News:

"Winslet’s Dream Marriage That Hit Reality"

Kate Winslet had seemed to have the type of marriage that Hollywood stars could only tell their therapists they dreamt about. Jim Threapleton was a "rather glorious-looking blond boy with fantastic blue eyes" who Winslet, 25, talked about spending the rest of her life with, and the birth of their daughter, Mia, in February 2000, reinforced the perception.

They met in 1998 on the Moroccan set of Hideous Kinky, where Winslet was the star and Threapleton the third assistant director. She has admitted thinking to herself "I'm marrying you, that's it!" after being struck by love at first sight during the shoot.

One year later, her prediction came true. Winslet "wept a sea of tears" when the couple married in Reading, Berkshire, in November 1998. It was a low-key event where friends and family - including actress Emma Thompson - ate sausage and mash at the Crooked Billet pub during the reception, showing Winslet's characteristic determination to keep her feet firmly on the ground.

In January 2000, news broke that Winslet was pregnant, and a daughter was born in October. Named Mia, the Italian word for "mine", Winslet has spoken to the press about the joys and concerns of motherhood. Her concerns have mainly been fears about not living up to the expectations of being a good mother, and not wanting to look like the back end of a bus.

The joys have been glowing comments about her new family in her disarmingly honest style. Earlier this year, she still hoped to create a "magical, untouchable world" for her family. "It's nice to be happy and not questioning anything in my life. And that's definitely been since I met Jim," she told a newspaper.

She has praised Threapleton for being so good with Mia - and said she wished she could be so good with the baby - but has recently admitted for the first time that there have been difficulties. "There are highs and lows and at times it's tough," she told InStyle magazine.

Winslet met Threapleton shortly after the death of her previous boyfriend, EastEnders scriptwriter Stephen Tedre, from cancer. But she has said the relationship with Threapleton was the only one she thought would last for the rest of her life.

Her hopes were raised when the success of Titanic catapulted her to the Hollywood A-list. "Thank God he hung in there, most people couldn't have taken it," she later told a journalist. Her role opposite Leonardo DiCaprio helped Titanic make twice as much money as any other film at world box offices, and was the launching pad for the next stage of her career.

She had previously won praise - but never massive success - in Heavenly Creatures, Jude and Sense and Sensibility, which earned her an Oscar nomination. Since Titanic, she has starred in Quills and Holy Smoke, and is set to hit screens next as a World War II code breaker in Enigma.

Winslet had said that she wanted Threapleton - who also worked on The Mummy - to direct her. But that, like the marriage, is now off.

From the UK Telegraph:

"Kate Winslet Splits From Her Husband After 'Rows'," By Nicola Woolcock

The actress Kate Winslet and her husband Jim Threapleton are separating after nearly three years of marriage. The star of the film Titanic and Mr Threapleton, an assistant film director, have an 11-month-of daughter, Mia.

While the cause of their separation is not known, it is understood to have followed weeks of arguments between the couple.

The split caught many by surprise as Miss Winslet has frequently declared her devotion to her husband - most recently in a magazine. She told In Style: "An actor's happiness has to come from something other than work. I know we're very lucky." She also described her husband as "like a girlfriend" and says having a baby has strengthened their relationship.

Her spokesman, Robert Garlock, said last night: "Kate Winslet and Jim Threapleton announced today that they have decided to separate. No other parties are involved in this amicable and respectful separation. Their daughter Mia will remain first priority for both of them."

Miss Winslet and Mr Threapleton met on the set of the film, Hideous Kinky, where he was third assistant director. She said at the time she had "fallen in love at first sight" with a "glorious-looking boy".

When news of their romance first became public, Miss Winslet said: "He is so dashing. I love him. It was an instant attraction. He's very real and so down to earth and we're having such a great time together. He makes me laugh my head off."

She said last year that marriage to Threapleton came as a relief: "I found it so wonderful to think 'this is it now'. I can relax as a person now and know that he completely accepts me for who I am. Marriage has made us closer and more appreciative of each other and it has made me much calmer. It is lovely to have been together for three years. Every day I can still look at him and say 'I really fancy him'."

The couple married in a low-key ceremony at Winslet's local church in Reading, Berks, in 1998. The church service was followed by a reception in a country pub, where guests dined on sausages and mash.

The couple launched a film company called Telltale films in July last year to produce and develop European based films.

Winslet's first public outing after the birth of Mia was at the premiere of the film, Quills, when she left her husband at home looking after the baby.

She is due to meet the Prince of Wales later this month at the premiere of her wartime film Enigma, produced by Mick Jagger.

From The Mirror:

'She had a child, she lost weight, now she leaves her husband... Kate Winsplit'

Showbiz Exclusive

Actress Kate Winslet and her husband Jim Threapleton are splitting up, they revealed last night. The shock separation was said to be the culmination of weeks of argument between the couple.

Titanic star Kate, 25, and film director Jim, 26, had a baby daughter Mia less than a year ago after marrying in November 1998.

And last month Kate showed off a new slimline shape after shedding four stone following a pregnancy in which she had reached 131/2 stone.

Winslet's spokesman Robert Garlock disclosed the end of what had seemed a perfect showbiz marriage. He said: "Kate Winslet and Jim Threapleton announced today that they have decided to separate. No other parties are involved in this amicable and respectful separation. Their daughter Mia will remain first priority for both of them."

Reading-born Kate married up-and-coming director Threapleton after they fell for each other on the set of the film Hideous Kinky. At the time Oscar- nominee Kate said she "fell in love at first sight" with a "glorious- looking boy".

They shunned a big glitzy wedding in favour of a quiet ceremony in the church where Kate was christened. It was followed by a reception for 150 friends and relatives at her local pub, the Crooked Billet.

Kate said Mia's birth last October was the "best thing that ever happened". Her first public outing after Mia's arrival was the premiere of the film Quills, when she left her husband at home holding the baby.

She shed her amazing four stone within a year and gave all the credit to a Chinese therapy called "facial analysis". Proud Kate told her fans: "I was an absolute sight. My bottom looked like purple sprouting broccoli and other body parts resembled squashes."

She is due to meet Prince Charles later this month at the premiere of her new wartime film Enigma, produced by Mick Jagger.

Earlier this year The Mirror revealed she and Jim had bought a dream marital home in Surrey. The riverside residence, called The Pump House, cost about £500,000. Their move followed several stalker scares and Kate wanted to protect baby Mia.

In a recent magazine interview, Kate hinted at troubles within the relationship. Although she said having a baby had "strengthened the relationship", she added: "There are highs and lows and at times it's tough."

Describing Jim, she added: "He's like a girlfriend. He says, 'Yes that works, turn up the cuffs, and, no, Kate, your bum does not look big in that'." She also said an actor's career came second to home life.

From The Sun:

"Titanic Star Kate Win-split With Hubby," By Neil Michael and Simon Wheeler

Movie star Kate Winslet's fairytale marriage is over after just three years. The Titanic beauty announced last night that she and film director husband Jim Threapleton had split up. Friends said Kate, 25, had thrown him out of their luxury home after months of furious rows. Her spokesman described the split as "an amicable and respectable separation".

Kate and 27-year-old Jim have an 11-month-old daughter Mia and their marriage was always seen as one of the most solid in showbiz.

Kate, whose new movie Enigma has its royal premiere this month, was unavailable for comment. But the split has stunned her friends. One said last night: "I am very shocked by what has happened. But over the last few months they seemed to have been rowing about everything. I think she was getting a bit fed up with the constant nagging. And he was fed up with being sidelined, and being literally left holding the baby." Jim, 27, stayed at home with Mia when Kate went to the premiere of the movie Quills just three months after the birth, which friends said he was not be happy about.

"Kate’s Dream Life in Ruins," by Vicki Grimshaw, Sun Woman Editor

It’s the news that will shock the nation and rock the world of showbiz. Kate Winslet is the country's golden girl. The woman who seemed to have everything - beauty, talent, a stratospheric career and a gorgeous baby girl, 11-month old Mia. And a rock solid marriage to film director husband Jim Threapleton, 27, seemed to be sewn up in that wonderful perfect package.

Now the pair have announced that they will separate less than three months short of their third wedding anniversary.

They met on the set of the movie Hideous Kinky in Morocco. Jim, a hunky fair-haired assistant director on the film, swept her off her feet. It was love at first sight for Kate, 25. She said: "It was ... Oh, I'm going to spend the rest of my life with you straightaway. Absolutely."

Falling in love had been the last thing on her mind. She said: "I arrived in Morocco and saw this rather glorious looking blonde boy with fantastic blue eyes and I just went 'S**t!' because I knew that was it. And there was nothing either of us could do about it. And that proved to be true. We got married a year later."

When they wed there was no sign of any Hello or OK! deal earning them phone number figures. They shunned a huge flashy affair that she could have easily afforded. Instead their wedding was in their local church near Reading, Berks, and the reception was held in a pub, where the guests dined on bangers and mash, followed by Bakewell Tart and custard. There were no stars, only close friends and family - which reflected her distaste for the glitz of Hollywood and the world of showbiz. Their honeymoon was distinctly unstated and un-showbizzy. Instead of a romantic, tropical beach in the Caribbean, Kate and Jim chose to go cycling in Scotland and surfing in Cornwall, a hobby they both shared.

They obviously also shared a passion for their work - films - but once they married Kate decided to put her career lower down her scale of priorities. She deliberately took low-key roles. When their daughter Mia was born it seemed to seal this perfect marriage and everyone thought this would be one showbiz partnership that would go the full distance.

As the dust settles and people slowly take in the news, the first question on everyone's lips is sure to be: "Why?" Why did a couple who seemed so in love, no longer love each other enough to stay together, particularly with a baby?

Kate recently confessed that the pair would share the child care, and on a recent trip to Los Angeles she missed her baby so much that she took Mia's baby suit with her and slept with it every night.

But maybe her next statement gave a hint that all was not quite so rosy in a seemingly idyllic marriage. She said: "Having a baby has strengthened the relationship, although there are highs and lows and at times it's tough. I know we're very lucky."

Just two weeks ago Kate appeared in glossy woman's mag InStyle with a dramatically new look - maybe another clue that Kate was changing her views on life. The once curvaceous Kate, who gave hope to millions of plump women by refusing to lose weight, had suddenly shed an astonishing FOUR STONES after giving birth. Gone was the heavy bosom that had been shoe-horned into corsets for her acting roles including Rose in Titanic - the film that made her an overnight worldwide star.

According to Kate, who was once a glorious size 14, the birth of Mia ten months ago had left her looking like "the back end of a bus". She recently told InStyle magazine: "I was an absolute sight. My bottom looked like purple sprouting broccoli and other body parts resembled squashes. After delivering Mia, I thought, 'Great, now I can wear my leather trousers'. I cried when they wouldn't go past my calves."

Kate played her latest role in Enigma while pregnant. She said: "I was the perfect person to play the frumpy friend ... because I WAS frumpy."

Kate and Jim were pictured together with Mia enjoying the Womad Festival in her home-town of Reading, Berks., just five weeks ago.

Last night Kate's parents were keeping tight-lipped about the breakdown of the 33-month long marriage.

Mum Sally said simply: "We don't want to talk about it. We don't have anything to say about it right now."

From The UK Times:

"Winslet’s Titanic Romance Sinks After Three Years"

It seemed to be the great romance that would defy Hollywood stereotypes. Kate Winslet was always full of praise for her husband Jim Threapleton and the simple pleasures of their down-to-earth life together.

But yesterday the Titanic actress announced that they were separating after less than three years of marriage. They have an an 11-month-old daughter, Mia. Winslet’s spokesman, Robert Garlock, said that no other parties were involved and described the separation as "amicable and respectful". He added that Mia would "remain first priority for both of them".

The spokesman refused to reveal the reasons for the split, which is understood to have come after weeks of arguments between the couple. Winslet’s mother Sally said: "We don’t want to talk about it or have anything to say about it right now."

News of the separation will surprise many film industry insiders, who described Winslet, 25, and her 27-year-old husband as a level-headed couple.

The star, one of a six-strong family of actors from Reading, has shunned a glitzy Hollywood lifestyle and said in a recent interview that her acting career came second to her home life. "An actor’s happiness has to come from something other than work. I know we’re very lucky," she told last month’s In Style magazine. Having a baby had "strengthened the relationship, although there are highs and lows and at times it’s tough". She described her husband: "He’s like a girlfriend. He says, ‘Yes that works, turn up the cuffs, and, no, Kate, your bum does not look big in that’."

When people suggested that the twice Oscar-nominated star put down roots in Los Angeles after the success of Titanic in 1997, she answered: "Why? What for?" Threapleton, the son of an RAF officer from Ripon, West Yorkshire, met Winslet in Morocco in August 1998 when he was third assistant director on Hideous Kinky, in which she played a single mother. The actress said that she "fell in love at first sight" with a "glorious-looking boy".

Friends said that the difference in status between the couple rarely presented any obstacles and Winslet said that they hardly talked about money. Interviewers often remarked how she could not stop talking about her husband, whom she has described as "absolutely brilliant" with their baby. She said: "There are times when I look at him with her and think ‘God, I wish I could be as brilliant with her as he is’."

The pair married at a low-key ceremony at the Winslet family’s parish church, All Saints in Reading, in November 1998 attended by mainly family and close friends. The 150 guests, including the actress Emma Thompson, who starred with Winslet in Sense and Sensibility, attended a reception at an Oxfordshire village pub. They were entertained by Drive the Weavers Mad, a traditional Irish folk band who played music featured in the "below decks" scenes in Titanic. Guests were greeted with mulled wine and champagne and dined on bangers and mash and bakewell tart. The couple’s honeymoon was also a down-to-earth affair at an hotel in the Yorkshire Dales where they ate pub food, drank real ale and played backgammon in the public bar.

The couple recently set up their own production company, Telltale Films, to develop and produce European-based projects.

Photographs of Winslet in a glamorous pose appeared in national newspapers recently after she shed four stones in weight.

She put her dieting success down to a "face analysis" eating plan that enabled her to assess which nutrients and minerals she was lacking in her diet, she said.
